The city of Philadelphia has announced an agreement to pay a $9.25 million settlement in connection with the police response to protests after the death of George Floyd in 2020. While dozens were killed and billions of dollars of damage were done during the riots that raged across America for weeks in the summer of 2020, it is the participants themselves who will be paid restitution by the government.

This is sadly on the nose from start to finish. I was in Minneapolis for most of summer 2020. If on May 23rd if you had hosted a small BBQ get together in your backyard it was tantamount to attempted murder because no one was supposed gather with anyone. But if nine days later you weren't out in the street shoulder-to-shoulder for hours on end with thousands of strangers shouting at the top of your lungs, then you were suspected to be a racist white supremacist sympathizer, or something. That summer in that city is 75% of why I'm no longer a democrat and am now politically independent.
